We have been busy for the last two months visiting the women who came forward to be part of the project. we have met women of all ages and who have worked in many different types of industries. The volunteers have also been busy practising their interviewing skills and putting them to use!

We have met women who have worked at Samuel Foxes in Stocksbridge during the war, women who work for Fast Track in Doncaster, women who have worked at KP nuts, women who have worked in the cutlery industry in Sheffield and also women who were involved in the ‘Women against Pit Closures’ during the 1984 strikes.

We still have more interviews to taking place and have begun the arduous task of transcribing the interviews and turning them into something that everyone can have access to!

Exhibitions and Workshops are to come in the summer, watch this space for announcements of location, date and time….

The Sheffield Star has published an article dated 28.02.09 titled;
‘Snapshots of mum's past brought to life’

The article wrote about the story of Gary Noble finding his mother in the pictures that the ‘Women In Industry’ project has used for it press and marketing. The image was originally from Picture Sheffield, part of the Sheffield Archives and showed three buffer girls taking a tea break during World War Two.

The project still needs for women to tell us their stories about working in industry in South Yorkshire. The project is looking at a 100 year span, so if you worked during the war years or are still working in industry now we would like to hear from you!

We have now published a summary of the research report which covers all the key elements of the lives of women who have worked in industry in South Yorkshire over the past 100 years.

The summary picks out key facts and interesting information about all aspect of women’s life.

Women In Industry Research Document Received

The Women In Industry oral history project commissioned a research document from Lynne Fox in November 2008. The research was to inform the oral history enquiry and to form the basis of the exhibition that will be held in the summer around the information that will be collected from the oral histories.
The project has now received the research document and with it a treasure trove of images that have been kindly provided to us with permission from archives across the region.

A summary of the research findings will be available within the next few weeks.

Oral History Society Training Day

We have now found all our volunteers and held our training day, 'An Introduction to Oral History' with Michelle Winslow from the Oral History Society.

The day covered things from a historical overview of Oral History through to ethics of using the technique, practicing with our new equipment and testing our questioning skills.

For the volunteers who missed the training we will arrange a meeting to pass on what we have learnt.

We are still looking for volunteers, get in touch if you if you are interested...

In terms of time commitment the project will involve:

· An hour’s induction – meet the Trust staff, other volunteers and learn more about the project

· A one day training course, in Sheffield centre

· A small number of pre-arranged and mutually agreeable dates for the interviewing of participants

· Help in putting together and running the 4 exhibition and workshop in your area.

Travel Expenses will be paid

By the end of the project you will have learned the skills required for oral history taking and be able to use this for your own family research – bringing your ‘family tree’ to life or in your community or workplace.

Buffer Girl Found!

The Trust received a call last week from someone who had seen the article in the Yorkshire Post, Tuesday 16th Dec 2008, and was able to identify one of the women in the 'Buffer Girls drinking tea picture' (right, middle) as his mother!
We have been using the picture in a lot of our publicity because it was such a lovely image. As a response the caller then sent us more photos of his mother from Dixon's Cutlery and working on the Civil Defence Ambulance, (below left Dixon's Cutlery, below right Civil Defence Ambulance)
We now have even more images to add to our data base and a lovely story to go with them.

Women In Industry gets Yorkshire Post spread

Tuesday 16th December 2008, 'Women In Industry' was covered by the Yorkshire Post with a full page three article. The piece used high definitions images taken from the Sheffield Local studies picture library, Picture Sheffield. Having such high profile coverage in not just the region but the whole of South Yorkshire, again boosted the interest from the general public and we have managed to recruit both volunteers and participants. 'South Yorkshire Women In Industry' Project has received some positive press attention since the Press Release of 01/12/08. So far we can count two articles in The Sheffield Star, and shown here are the cuttings from the Sheffield Look Local (left), and The Rotherham Advertiser (below). We have had a good public response from these articles and have had a number of calls and emails this week from people wanting to get involved. 'South Yorkshire Women In Industry' needs Volunteers and Participants!

South Yorkshire Women’s Development Trust is delighted to have been awarded funding by the Heritage Lottery Fund to carry out an Oral History project ‘South Yorkshire Women in Industry’. The project aims to research and archive the experiences of South Yorkshire women working in industry over the past 100 years, record their experiences and celebrate their and celebrate their contribution to the region’s heritage.

Dr Fiona Spiers Head of Heritage Lottery Fund Yorkshire and the Humber said:
“Women played a vital role in the industrial heritage of the South Yorkshire Region; a hidden history that is sometimes forgotten. ‘The South Yorkshire Women in Industry’ project will preserve this unique heritage by bringing their stories to life, letting everyone get involved and share their past.”

We would like volunteers and participants from all ages, backgrounds and from all areas of the region:

As a volunteer you will:

- Receive training on gathering oral history, including how to use recording equipment
- Have the chance to contribute to your local history and build up a bank of knowledge that can be used by local communities.
- Take part in workshops, and an exhibition that will be formed around the information you have collected.
- Gain the skills to research your own community or family - bring the past to life!

Contributors

As a participant you will:

- Have the chance to tell your story about the way you have lived and worked.
- Play an important role in the filling in of the gaps about women in the history of industrial work in the region.
- Have your oral history archived across the region for future generations to use.
- Meet new people in your area who are interested in local history.
- Take part in workshops, and an exhibition that will be formed around the information you have given.

It could be your Mother, Grandmother, sister or any other relative or friend who worked in such an environment whose story you could tell on their behalf.
